CERAMITE
FOR ALUMINIUM CRUCIBLE LININGS:
Introduced at Elkem Aluminium Lista in 1991 as alternative to brick linings.
Main motive: Thinner lining, increased volume.
Turned out to also give 3-4 times longer service time.
A new concept for:
– Quicker relining
– Quicker dry-out and heating
– Generally improved quality and more controlled properties
compared to cast linings
Trials with precast Ceramite
segments
Hydro Aluminium Sunndal 1997:
• Bottom: precast Ceramite CSR
• Side: precast BKR
• Service time approx 31 000 Mt
Mozambique Aluminium
• 5 test crucibles, capacity 12 Mt
• Bottom divided in 5 segments
• Latest up-date: ca 17 000 Mt
• All 5 crucibles still in operation
Hillside, South Africa
• 1 test crucible, capacity 12 Mt
• Bottom-lined with 5 Ceramite segments
• Service time 23 000 Mt, lining was removed due to erosion
of side walls
Elkem Aluminium Mosjoen
Test project:
• 4 crucibles lined with in situ cast Ceramite
• 4 crucibles lined with precast Ceramite segments
Aim:
– Increase capacity
– Improve service time
– Reduce time for relining
Experiences so far...
In service since October 2004
Crucibles lined with Ceramite have transported double
amount of liquid aluminium as compared to conventional crucibles
lined with bricks
The reason for this is that Ceramite crucibles have
larger capacity, and therefore preferred by the tapers
Quote from project manager: “Crucibles with precast
segments still have a smooth and almost perfect surface, and
are clearly less eroded than crucibles with cast lining.”
